The first goal of the space race to get objects into orbit, was was first done by the Soviet Union, who lunched Sputnik. The United State’s reaction to this was the National Aeronautics and Space Administration. When the US did launch it’s first satellite, its name was the explorer I.
The first human into space was Yuri Gagarin, on April 12, 1961. The first American to orbit the Earth was John Glenn on May 5th, 1961, and Alan Shepard was also the first America to be in space. The first woman in space, however, was Valentina Tereshkova. On May, 1961, Kennedy declared that the US would put a man on the moon before the end of a decade.
